Satori is the second album by Japanese rock band Flower Travellin' Band, but their first of original material. It was released in Japan by Atlantic Records, and in Canada by GRT Records in 1971.[1]
The Canadian release differed to the original, as it contained songs off their upcoming album Made in Japan and the bonus track "Lullaby".[2] (See Satori (Canadian album).)
The original Japanese version was reissued on CD by Warner Music in 1988.[3] It was digitally remastered in 1998.[4] In 2009 it was remastered on the new SHM-CD format.[5] A re-release in 1991 contained the bonus track "Map", which was written by Kuni Kawachi and originally on his album Kirikyogen, which featured Joe Yamanaka and Hideki Ishima, under the name "Works Composed Mainly By Humans".[6] This version of the song was previously released as a single by Flower Travellin' Band. Satori is distributed worldwide by Phoenix Records, on both CD and Vinyl.[2]

The song "Satori Pt. 3" was later re-imagined into their staple song "Hiroshima", on their Made in Japan album.

Although the album wasn't released to an American audience until 2003, Satori had critical acclaim on its re-issue. David Fricke of Rolling Stone stated Satori as his "favorite Japanese rock album of all time".[8] Allmusic gave the album 4½ stars out 5 and made it their pick as the band's top album calling it "a real classic".[7] In September 2007, Rolling Stone Japan rated Satori #71 on their list of the "100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time".[9]

Vancouver based progressive art/noise band Superconductor covered "Satori Pt. 1" on their 1994 EP Heavy with Puppy.
Japanese progressive thrash metal band Gargoyle recorded a cover of "Satori Pt. 1" for the 2000 compilation album Japanese Heavy Metal Tribute Tamashii. "Satori Pt. 2" was covered by thrash metal band Outrage for the 2000 Flower Travellin' Band Tribute album.[10]
Portland based instrumental post-rock band Grails did a rendition of "Satori Pt. 3" on their 2005 EP entitled Interpretations of Three Psychedelic Rock Songs from Around the World.
Texas based hardcore/metal band Iron Age recorded a cover of "Satori Pt. 1" on their 2008 7" entitled "The Way is Narrow".
